Does a publicly listed email address mean I can contact it?
Publication alone is not unrestricted permission. Under CASL’s conspicuous-publication provisions, conditions include how the address was published, the absence of a statement against unsolicited messages, and relevance to the person’s business role. Verify the applicable conditions and keep evidence rather than assuming that anything searchable is available for marketing.
How to approach it
- Save the original publication page and date.
- Record the professional relevance of the intended message.
- Do not send when the basis remains uncertain.
A copied address in an aggregated list may not show what the original page said. Revisit the original source and distinguish technical email verification from a documented reason to contact.
