What it costs in hours of your life.
How this works
The price is divided by what an hour of your work earns. A yearly salary is turned into an hourly rate using the hours you work a week across 52 weeks. If you put in the share you keep after tax, the rate is reduced to what you actually take home, which is the money that pays for things. A working day is a fifth of your weekly hours.
Questions people ask
How do I work out how many hours of work something costs?
Divide the price by your hourly pay after tax. At 24 an hour keeping 75 per cent, you take home 18 an hour, so a 54 purchase is three hours of work.
How do I turn a salary into an hourly rate?
Divide the yearly salary by the hours you work in a year. At 40 hours a week that is 2,080 hours, so 52,000 a year is 25 an hour before tax.
